![]() If you didn't like Skyrim but were grabbed by Oblivion, I'd say go for Morrowind. Having said that, Oblivion and Morrowind both had more peaceful paths to finishing quests, whereas Skyrim was often inevitably "go to quest marker, kill thing there, return for reward." It frequently has the same binary choices as follow-up Elder Scrolls games. However, people consistently give the wrong impression of Morrowind being some kind of super-RPG and it just isn't. What Morrowind excels at is in world building and the reputation system feels more genuine and the advancement in houses and guilds is a grind (as you'd expect). I mean, this is Skyrim 101, so let's not pretend Morrowind is this deep RPG of richly woven dialogue choices and decisions. Given the overwhelming levels of praise Morrowind gets I was expecting something a bit more than "go to this egg cavern and stop the poachers" and when you arrive they immediately attack you without discussion. But I will definitely give Morrowind a try in the future and have decided not to write it off just yet.Īs one who recently played Morrowind for the first time, I partially agree with your comment. The main thing putting me off Morrowind right is the dnd dice roll system for combat and I don't really feel like modding anything right now. Should I try Skyrim again now that I've been able to get through an Elder Scrolls game? Or should I go for Morrowind?Įdit: Thank everyone for the advice! I think I'm going to try Skyrim one more time and give it a proper go first, then move on to Morrowind. The game can randomly crash SO MANUALLY SAVE A LOT! My character would stand there unable to move for about a minute before I could start walking again. Halfway through the game, I was no longer able to sit on any furniture. The screams of your character receiving damage It took me a while to get used to hearing the same 4 voices used for all the characters. It's also pretty dark in some areas, especially dungeons. The environment itself is gorgeous, but the people? Not so much. There's a bit of everything: Puzzles, running around, crafting, story, the arena, heavy armor and destructive abilities with massive two-handed weapons, light armor, and health and illusion abilities with long-range and one-handed weapons. There is a great balance between narrative, exploration, and action. Autosave works great and the game has fast loading times. Side quests were a lot of fun because the stories always had two sides and you could decide how to get to the final objective. But the few I did use regularly were easily managed. I was not a big spell person and relied mostly on stealth and bows. Once you find a fighting style that fits you, you can take on almost anything. You can find a way to cross a mountain to get to a location you see on your mini-map and the only limits are literally the edges of the world map. ![]() The outline of the story might not be unique (you start as a nobody who is given the mission to become a hero and stop the world from ending) but the lore that makes up the details is amazing. Playstyle can easily be changed without having to start over if you don't like your original build. Controls are easy to get a handle on so I'm not accidentally pushing the wring keys (I played keyboard/mouse) when I start panicking around enemies. The old /r/patientgamers Essential Games ListĬouldn't really get into Skyrim, but Oblivion consistently kept me up until 2 am because I couldn't stop playing.
